To the Job-Hunter with Too Many Career Interests,

Writer: Jennifer BeechJennifer Beech

I get it. You must feel a little career drunk, like you're in a daze. You've been doing so many informational interviews and everyone's job sounds so delightful. Or you're just really talented. You think it may be the burnout talking, and maybe it is. Maybe you've always been a multi-passionate individual and you're good at a lot of stuff. So how can you get yourself to focus so you can actually leave your current job? Here are some tips:

Rank the possibilities. As they say, you can do anything, but you can't do everything. At least not all at once. Pursue what really excites your first. Don't limit yourself here; pretend you are qualified for everything. You are probably more qualified than you think you are and getting qualified may not be as hard as you think it is.

Jobs are what you make of them. This may sound weird, but hear me out. If you're an educator, I'm sure you will educate your customers or clients in whatever job you have, whether you're an accountant or a corporate trainer. Accountants certainly don't need a teaching background, but man does it help. I'm sure you would be a much more empathetic and flexible accountant than your colleagues, but just as good at accounting. Whatever your job title ends up being and whatever your background is, your job is what you make it to be. So you don't have to be in a certain field to do certain work.

Many industries are interdisciplinary. You may be drawing on your data analysis skills, communication and writing, storytelling, and software testing all in the same job. There are ways to combine all or maybe some of your interests together.

Bottom line, you can do this. Don't overthink it and go with your gut. Give up the idea that there is a "right" path. There's just paths. If you don't like one, you hop off and take another so give yourself some grace.
