How many times have you had to write about something boring or uninteresting? I’m not counting school. If you write for a living or you get the occasional writing assignment from your boss, I’m sure you have ran across topics that you really didn’t want to write about. Here’s some tips on how to get through it.
Push yourself. Sometimes you can push yourself to just get it done. If you can do a Pomodoro or 2 writing about this uninteresting topic, reward yourself. It can help if you can emotionally detach yourself from your writing.
Write about why the topic is so uninteresting. Is it painstakingly detailed? Is it too general? Do you think your audience won’t care? If any of these are the case, your boredom could be signaling that the topic needs to be reworked.
Write about someone who would find the topic interesting. If you think your audience won’t care, then maybe you need to rethink your audience. Who would care? What is that person like? What characteristics would the people in that audience share?
Be honest. Are you self-censoring? It’s very easy to censor your writing and therefore try to sabotage it. Are you just saying it’s boring because you don’t like what you have written? Are you comparing yourself to other writers? It’s very easy to reject or procrastinate on our own writing to try to save ourselves the pain of others rejecting our writing. Or so we tell ourselves. Tell your inner critic to shut up and write. I guarantee you it’s not as bad as you think it is.
Write about a topic you do find interesting. Here’s the real test of whether you just don’t want to write or you just don’t want to write about a particular topic. Write about something you do like. You may find that easier. Plus, it’s a great way to “warm up” sort of speak.
Hopefully these tips will help you survive the boring writing assignment. What tips do you have?
